Again Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans participates in the annual Wreath for Vets Event. The SGVHV lead for this Event is Pam Jamerson. Pam and team worked to help get the wreaths ready and then several of the SGVHV team went out to help place the wreaths on the graves.
Wreaths were placed on approximately 8000 graves in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. With what seems to have become a Family tradition, on the Saturday following Thanksgiving thousands come out to participate and pay respect during this humbling experience.
In 2007, Jean Shine found out that wreaths had been laid on some graves but was 400 short. Shine bought the wreaths herself, and worked with a group of volunteers to put them out. Wreaths for Vets was born and their mission continues today. Today, the annual event sees thousands of volunteers and recognition from the City of Killeen, State of Texas, and Fort Hood.
Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, the Commanding General at II Corps and Fort Hood, spoke at the event Saturday. "The wreath laying tradition started over a decade ago," General Funk said. "It is only possible because of you, the remarkable men and women of this great community... your teamwork with Wreaths for Vets, insures that a wreath is placed on every grave."
Lt. Gen. Funk II, also took a picture with some members of SGVHV and commended us on the work we are doing in the Community.
With honor and respect Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans Team visited and paid tribute to each of the graves of SGVHV members. Deceased Veterans & SG-VHV Team Members laid to rest at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery include:
